There was a wonderful article in the Gazette of the Institute of Medical
Laboratory Technology (now the Institute of Biomedical Sciences) by EA
Wallington.
The reference is Med Lab Sci 1979 Jan 31:3-61. As you can see it is a
lengthy article but an excellent one. I have yet to find one which compares
to this. Sadly,  I left my copy with colleagues in the UK before coming to
Oman and they cannot find it at present. I do know someone who has a copy
but if you can find it yourself it is well worth a read. I am trying to get
a copy to include in my students literature as I think it is an excellent
reference.
