Re: Please help!!!!

From:Lee & Peggy Wenk

Well, no one seems to be answering this one, so I'll
give it a shot.

(Summary of problem - person has taken the
histotech exam 5 times (failed 4, no show
once) and is now being told she cannot take the
exam again.)

First of all, I'm assuming that the exam is the
histotech exam from the ASCP Board of Registry.
I'm not certain, since your signature indicates
Toronto, Canada.

So, if you were talking about the Canadian
certification exam, please disregard the following.

On Page 11 of the ASCP Board of Registry (BOR)
application booklet sent to all applicants, it states:

"MAXIMUM NUMBER OF EXAMINATION ATTEMPTS"

"You are permitted to take the examination in any one particular
category a total of five times. If you are unsuccessful after five
attempts, you are ineligible for further examination in that
category."

So, you have had 5 attempts (a no show is an attempt).
So you are ineligible to try again in that category.

Two suggestions:

1. If the "no show" just happened, and if it was do to a
documentable problem that prohibited you from taking
the exam, you MIGHT be able to persuade ASCP BOR
to let you try one more time.

The problem would have to be something like you
gave birth that morning, were trapped in your car
due to a car accident on the way to the exam,
you had an emergency appendectomy the night
before, etc.

I have no idea if it would work. I don't know anyone
who was a no show. But ASCP just MIGHT, and
I repeat, MIGHT reconsider.

But, if the no show was some time ago, this will not
work. Again, on Page 11, it states:

"REAPPLYING FOR ANOTHER EXAMINATION
PERIOD"

"If you cancel, do not appear, miss your scheduled
appointment date or are determined ineligible, you must
submit a full application fee by the application deadline
dates indicated on Page 4 (my note - the same deadline
dates as for all the exams) to reapply for another
examination period."

So, if you did not "petition" for reconsideration
within the application deadline, then it is too late now.

2. The other option is to take the other histotech exam.

You do not mention which histotech exam you were
going for.

If you have your BA/BS (equivalent in the US), and
were trying for the Histotechnologist (HTL) exam,
then you can still take the Histologic Technician
(HT) exam (and get your five new tries).

If you were trying for the HT exam, then you
can still go to college, obtain your BA/BS (equivalent
in the US), and take the HTL exam (with your
new 5 tries).

These are the only two option that come to mind.

Good luck.
