Re: Cut off times

From:Charnell.E.Jones@questdiagnostics.com

1. We handle an average of 32,000-36,000 cases a year. The case load varies day
to day, but has an average of 100-180 cases daily.
2. The first biopsy run begins at 11:00 AM and ends at 3:00 PM. The second
biopsy run begins at 4:30 PM and ends at 8:30 PM. The overnight run is begun at
4:30 PM and ends at 12:30 AM. First shift techs(5 in total and 1 HT trainee) are
scheduled to arrive between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM. Their primary responsibilities
are cutting specimens from the overnight run, frozens, staining, coverslipping,
and special stains. We have one full-time tech who arrives at 3:00 PM and embeds
and cuts the first biopsy run. She also will embed the second biopsy run. We
have one full-time tech who arrives at 10:30 PM that cuts the second biopsy run
and embeds the tissue coming off of the overnight run. Also, there is a
part-time tech who comes in only on Tues., Wed., and Fri., and works from 8:00
PM to 4:30 AM. Since these are heavier cutting days, she will help with the
embedding and cutting of the second biopsy run.
3. The cut off time for grossing is 4:00 PM.
4. Mostly
5. Mostly - The PA's will consult with pathologist before a final decision is
made.
6. Yes

A year and half ago we switched to the current system that we now have. It has
been a tremendous help as far as turn around time. We have no complaints. If you
have any more questions or need more specifics, please do not hesitate to
contact me via e-mail.
