Dick:

I came across a procedure a while back that stated that even when using a
Zenker's substitute to "de-Zenkerize" with their procedure. I do not
remember what it was but I do remember thinking that it was odd!

Fixatives substituting zinc for mercury do not need to be treated
with iodine and thiosulfate. "De-Zenkerizing" removes mercurous
chloride particles, so fixatives without mercury can avoid this
process.
