Alan,

It doesn't sound like a fixation problem. It may be the slides are staying a
little too long in the slide oven or the temperature may be too high. It may
also be one of the steps of staining, such as dehydration or clearing. But the
hazy, lack of detail sound like something that is heat related.

Check the temperature of the paraffin baths on the tissue processor. Are these
biospies?

Subject: any ideas?

Hi all! Recently, our lab has been experiencing a hazy, lack of detail at
high magnification on all of our H&E's and special stains. I've changed ALL
reagents, cover slips, slides and mounting media yet still no change in
results. Could it be the formalin? We prepare 55 gallons of 10% NBF at a
time and the problems started around the same time a new batch of formalin
was made. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Alan
