The patient has already paid you to make their diagnosis. If you pathologist wants a colleagues opinion, you eat the charge. After all, you can't justify billing the patient for your own work if you can't provide the answer they need. 
if the patient requests a second opinion, they should be billed.

What is the industry standard for who pays when a pathologist refers slides
to another laboratory for consultation before making a diagnosis?  Is the
patient responsible for the charges or is the pathologist?
