We use methyl green pyronin as a counterstain for our Von Kossa stain on 4 
-5 micron deplasticized sections of undecalcified bone embedded in MMA.  I 
don't know if that stain will work on thick undeplasticized sections, 
though.  Another possible counterstain that we use occasionally is 
toluidine blue, pH 3.7 which shows up the cells nicely.
