Here's a nice microwave version of the Bodian Stain, courtesy of Dr.
Mathilde Boon:

The Bodian silver stain is used to color neurofibrils, unmyelinated and
myelinated nerve fibers.
 
SOLUTIONS NEEDED:

Protargol solution:
0.5 g    Protargol
3.0 g    Metallic Copper Shot
50 ml    Distilled water
NOTE: Prepare the solution immediately before use.
Developer solution:
1 g    Hydroquinone (C6H6O2)
50 ml    Distilled water
2.5 ml    37% formalin (CH2O)
NOTE: Prepare the solution immediately before use.
Gold Chloride solution:
1 g    Gold (III) Chloride (HAuCl4H2O, 49% pure)
100 ml    Distilled water
3 drops     Glacial Acetic acid
Oxalic Acid solution:
1 g    Oxalic acid dihydrate (C2H2O42H2O)
50 ml    Distilled water
Sodium Thiosulfate solution:
5 g    Sodium Thiosulfate (Na2S2O35H2O)
50 ml    Distilled water
PROCEDURE:
1.    Deparaffinize and bring to water
2.    60 min / 37C in conventional incubation / 50 ml of Protargol solution
3.    60 min / 60C / same Protargol solution
4.    Rinse well in distilled water
5.    10 min / 50 ml Developer solution
6.    Rinse well in distilled water
7.    2 min / 60C / 16 ml Gold Chloride solution
8.    Rinse well in distilled water
9.    10 min / 50 ml Oxalic Acid solution
10.    Rinse well in distilled water
11.    10 min / 50 ml Sodium Thiosulfate solution
12.    Rinse well in distilled water
13.    Dehydrate and mount

RESULTS:

Neurofibrils, unmyelinated and myelinated nerve fibers     black
Nucleoli    black
