Heinz bodies can be seen as highly refractile bodies near the periphery of
the red cell border in unstained wet preps. Just cover with a coverslip. If
you must use a stain they stain a light blue in wet preps with 1% brilliant
cresyl blue in normal saline or dark purple with 0.5% methyl violet (or
crystal violet) in saline. Heinz bodies are of variable shape and size and
can range from 'tiny' to almost 3 microns.
