At Baylor, we are using two shifts to cover the work load. I have one
technician that comes in at 3:00 and works until 11:00. She embeds and
cuts the G.I. biopsies that we start processing at 5:00 and she accessions
specimens for the next day, so when residents show up, we have stuff for
them to do. This has been a great thing and it really helps us. The GI
biopsies are cut, stained and ready to go out at 7:30 a.m. GI seem to take
a lot more time to embed and cut, because we do two levels on each slide.
We tried a 11:00-7:00 shift and that works also but not as well as the 3-11.
First of all, it's harder to get someone to work those hours. Also, we have
found that it takes a special person to work alone and be productive for the
hours that no one is around to oversee what goes on. Anyway, I plan on
sticking with the 3-11 shift as long as I can find someone to work it. It
also works out for techs who would like to go back to school and need days
free. We also provide a little bit of shift differential (1.25/ hour) not a
lot but every little bit helps. I hope this helps.

Due to the possibility of a consolidation of laboratories and an
expanded
staff and workload, I need information from those of you who have
labs
utilizing two or more shifts per day. What times do staff members
report? Do
you run additional processing runs during the day for those who may
work
later? Have any of you changed to this type of work schedule
recently and
how did staff respond to the change? If responses are too lengthy
for the
histonet, I'd be happy to contact anyone individually. Thanks in
advance for
	any and all help.
