There is no reason not to pre-treat for the sake of safety. The following is from the NIH reccomendations:

Adequate fixation of small tissue samples (e.g. biopsies) from a patient with suspected prion disease is followed by post-fixation in 96% absolute formic acid for 30 minutes, followed by 48 hours in fresh 10% formalin.

Hi,

i´ve been asked to work up some formalin fixed heart, lung, liver etc. but NOT brain or CNS from a case with sporadic CJD. I´ve been told that this can be done without any precautions, like every other specimen.

Is this true? And if not true, how should the specimens be treated?

We use Bouins fixative to set ink, just dip it in for a few seconds then go on your way.

Cheers Everyone,  Does anyone know if there is something that sets the ink on tissue after you have inked the margins.  I vaguely remember something but I cannot seemed to dig it out of my brain.
