It allows you to make a thicker coating on the slide.
I have done this for a particularly harsh method
(benzil in alkaline alcohol, to block arginine, followed
by an alkaline aqueous reagent) and it reduced section
losses. For that job, thick chrome-gelatin was better
than APES, thin chrome-gelatin or starch paste.
