Noting John Kiernan's comments re dye identity, I wonder if the blue dye was 
LUXOL fast blue? Salthouse did come up with stains using this, both for 
collagen and elastin staining, way back. Try looking at:

Salthouse TN. 1965. Selective staining of collagen and elastic by luxol fast 
blue G in methanol. J Histochem Cytochem. 13: 133-140

Salthouse TN. 1966. Preferential staining of collagen by acid dyes in 
methanol. Nature (London). 210: 1277.
