HercepTest is the FDA approved in vitro diagnostic test marketed by DAKO
Corp. It is a semi-quantitative immunohistochemical assay to determine
overexpression of HER2 protein (human epidermal growth factor receptor) in
breast cancer tissue. The assay can be performed on FFPE specimens. The HER2
protein is a membrane receptor tyrosine kinase. The HER2 gene ( a.k.a. c-erb
B-2 or neu or HER-2/neu ) is homologous, but distinct from EGFR (HER1) and
may also show amplification in a percentage of breast cancer patients.

For more information see the DAKO website at http://www.dakousa.com/dakousa

A good review is: Ross et al., The HER-2/neu Oncogene in Breast Cancer:
Prognostic Factor, Predictive Factor, and Target for Therapy, Stem Cells
1998;16:413-428.
