I know this isn't what you asked for, but you might want to try IHC with 
N-cadherin. Reacts nicely with the intercalated discs.

If you want, I can send you some photographs.

Can anyone send me or post the formula and staining and washing procedures
for the azocarmine-thionin stain for the intercalated discs of cardiac
muscle?
