Me salicylate is great for clearing small vertebrates for Alizarin 
Red-S/Alcian Blue skeletal stains. Even shows the air bladders of 
fish for a few days (before the Me salicylate diffuses across the 
bladder wall).
Doubt it helped their joints any, though.
