Hi Liz,
If I remember correctly when we were studying the chapter on acid fast
microbes a couple of weeks ago there was a notation in Carson's book about
the outer cell wall of m. Tb becoming non-acid fast if exposed to alcohols
thus yielding a false negative. The alcohol reacts with the lipid in the
membrane and strips it away if I remember correctly.
