RE: coverslipping by hand

From:Jackie.O'Connor@abbott.com

I'm another 30years plus tech.  I never coverslip with gloves, and I absolutely LOVE xylene, HATE xylene subs. However at the insistance of the TOX guys at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis- I DID stay away from xylene and formalin completely when I was pregnant when I workded there 21 years ago, and for subsequent pregnancies.   I don't have any dermatitis, nail problems, liver or kidney problems.   I limit my skin exposure to xylene by using slide forceps, or coverslipping from vertical type racks, where the tops of the slides don't touch the xylene, ergo, neither do my fingers.  I coverslip under a fume hood.  You can use anything as long as you use the appropriate safety precautions.  Be smart.
On the subject of safety and taking things to far - a safety person (at a very large organization) once wanted me to use chainmaile (?) gauntlets to cut frozen sections with.  I was almost written up for refusing to abide by her safety guidlines.  Sometimes you just gotta use common sense.

Never being hit by a car while playing in traffic.....does not make playing in traffic a wise thing to do!!  Do you have little globs of mercury on your desks that you play with too?!?!

You really should try not to become so emotionally involved.  I have coverslipped bare handed for 23 years and still have all my fingers, don't see spots before my eyes, liver and kidneys work fine and I'm still relatively sane.

It breaks my heart to read that there are techs out there NOT using gloves to coverslip!!  I have NEVER touched mountant or xylene with my bare hands and neither should anyone out there!  Buy nitrile gloves that fit you and arent too big and you should have NO problems!
