WORKSHOP #58:
Assessing the Fundamentals of Coding
and Compliance: Making the Most of a Complex Situation
Dennis Padget, CPA, Padget & Associates,
Simpsonville, KY & Elizabeth Sheppard, BS, HT(ASCP), Wake Forest University
Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC
Understanding the implications of complete and accurate
coding of pathology services is essential if a laboratory is to get proper
payment and avoid audit consequences. It is necessary that a comprehensive
compliance plan be established to meet all federal regulations and comply with
medical necessity guidelines. This workshop will explain the fundamentals of
proper CPT charge and ICD-9-CM diagnosis coding for the Anatomic Pathology
Laboratory. Emphasis will be placed on "bundled vs. unbundled" specimens, and
tissue pathology coding nuances. Additionally, we will discuss the federal
guidelines for a corporate compliance plan, including the elements of an
effective laboratory compliance program and important implementation
considerations.
