Re: GI biopsy blues
Donna Carlton suggests for facing GI tissue blocks:
>>Try hibaclens half and half with water for 10 min.<<
Hibiclens hand wash combines a mild detergent ("nonionic surfactant") with
chlorhexidine (Hibitane), a "quat" disinfectant. I think using Hibiclens in
microtomy is safe and reasonable, but it's not an entirely rational use of
the product.
Chlorhexidine hand wash - the usual brand name is Hibiclens, but there are
others, since chlorhexidine has been around since 1946 - is the best
documented of germicidal hand washes that aren't too hard on your hands. For
reasons I don't understand, Good Management prohibits its use, and an
occasional hissy fit is necessary to keep the stuff on hand for when you
really feel (and look) dirty after doing an autopsy.
