It stands for periodate, lysine and paraformaldehyde, which
are 3 of the ingredients used to make up the solution. Once
they are all dissolved, the fixative does not actually contain
any lysine or any paraformaldehyde. It is supposed to
cross-link cell surface glycoproteins, and it may do this,
but not in the way proposed by the originators of PLP.
